Sitting With Your Emotions

While we can separate emotions into strict categories such as sadness, anger, happiness, disgust, excitement etc., the way a human interprets or perceives these emotions are unique to the individual. And often, these emotions find themselves tangled up in a complex web. In my personal experience, I find myself in these moments of fight or flight scenarios when I am up against my emotions and need to find a solution. In terms of a flight response, it feels natural to run away from negative emotions, whether that means physically fleeing the location that is causing the stress, or choosing to ignore the underlying factors. On the other hand, fighting the emotion isn't necessarily helpful either because it may result in anger or frustration. Instead, challenge yourself to sit with the emotion. Revel in the moment of discomfort. You might be surprised that the emotion eventually passes without actively doing anything.
